Happy May y’all! I couldn’t resist sharing my beautiful mailbox garden with you. This cheerful planting says welcome to my home. Thank you for following along and I hope this post will help you with some of your cabinet chaos…Because around here right now, I’m on an organizing binge!
I was so pleased with my pantry overhaul last week that I decided to tackle two more disorganized and cluttered cabinets. The food container cabinet and the spice cabinet.
Below is how I sent the mess in the food container cabinet packing! Plus I hope you have the “thyme” to follow along with my next post for some “sage” advise on how I reorganized the spice cabinet! Yeah, I just included a really cheesy joke, sorry I couldn’t help myself! LOL 😉
Are you like me…do you have to keep going until everything is completed once you start a project like this? For me, I think it’s because the other areas tend to stick out like a sore thumb in comparison to the newly organized area. Whatever the reason is, I like the end result!
Now that I work from home and cook regularly the food container cabinet was getting on my last nerve. I couldn’t find what I needed without shuffling around the contents of the cabinet. If you were to look at the rest of my home, you would never guess these hidden horrors existed! Maybe that’s a good thing though.

The DREADED Food Container Cabinet – No wonder I couldn’t find anything in there.
I started by emptying the entire cabinet. The kitchen island was again the landing zone. Then I began stacking the containers together by size with their matching lids. Any container that didn’t have a lid or a lid that didn’t have a container was set aside. I was dumbfounded when this huge stack of lids without containers sat glaring at me from on top of the stove. I could not believe how many there were! Geez, this was ridiculous! Where the heck were all the missing containers?
I think there might be creatures that sneak into my house at night who purposely trash this cabinet and then steal the containers, not the lids, just the containers!
Since I store most of my food in Pyrex containers now, this cabinet was relatively easy to organize. I quit using plastic food containers a while back due to the health issues that can be associated with plastic.
When I changed everything out, I up-cycled the old plastic containers for craft storage or other non-food uses. In case you’re wondering, I up-cycled the lids at the same time…Maybe the missing containers are with the missing socks from the dryer?!
While the cabinet was empty, I gave it a good cleaning with mild soap and water. I tried several different ways of storing the items in the cabinet before I found the one that was user-friendly. Since I tend to use the storage containers the most, I put them on the top shelf. To keep the lids together, I placed them in a loaf pan for easy access. I think these were the biggest culprit in keeping this cabinet tidy so hopefully, this will help!
On the bottom shelf, I placed the items that I don’t use as often but left the measuring cups in the front for easy access. The salad spinner that had been in there got moved to the pantry when I organize that last week.
I think this layout is going to work! Since I completed this I’ve found it to be exceptionally user-friendly! Another bonus is when I put stuff back in this cabinet it is much easier now as everything has a specific place.
I figured while I was at it I would organize the drawer above this cabinet where I store my cutting boards and pot holders. It’s amazing what a little straightening can do! This took less than five minutes and made a world of difference.
There are many home organization projects you can complete quickly that give almost instant satisfaction. And yes, some of them can be rather extensive and take a lot of time to complete, but the rewards are so worth it.
Even if you just pick one thing every week, you will be amazed at how quickly you can accomplish organizing your kitchen and your home.
I hope this helps you in your kitchen. Feel free to share your organizing ideas with me. I would love to hear about them. As always if you have any questions, please let me know. Thanks for following along, friend!
